BOOK DESCRIPTION

A BookBub Best Romance of 2022 A London heiress rides out to the wilds of the English countryside to honor a marriage of convenience with a mysterious and reclusive stranger. Tall, dark, and dour, the notorious Captain Jasper Blunt was once hailed a military hero, but tales abound of his bastard children and his haunted estate in Yorkshire. What he requires now is a rich wife to ornament his isolated ruin, and he has his sights set on the enchanting Julia Wychwood. For Julia, an incurable romantic cursed with a crippling social anxiety, navigating a London ballroom is absolute torture. The only time Julia feels any degree of confidence is when she’s on her horse. Unfortunately, a young lady can’t spend the whole of her life in the saddle, so Julia makes an impetuous decision to take her future by the reins—she proposes to Captain Blunt. In exchange for her dowry and her hand, Jasper must promise to grant her freedom to do as she pleases. To ride—and to read—as much as she likes without masculine interference. He readily agrees to her conditions, with one provision of his own: Julia is forbidden from going into the tower rooms of his estate and snooping around his affairs. But the more she learns of the beastly former hero, the more intrigued she becomes…

MY REVIEW

Julia is an heiress who takes her marriage into her own hands, she wants to read and wants to be left alone. Her sickly and controlling parents are trying to keep her right where they want her, but she has too much spirit for that. Jasper needs an heiress, but also wants to keep his secrets. The story of the two of them learning about each other and growing together. Jasper’s secrets threaten to come out and eventually do in unexpected ways. Julia is a delightful character who seems content to be in the background. Her journey through the story brings out her strength and her tenacity. She is a strong young woman that didn't know her strength and courage. Jasper has a reputation of a brute, but Julia sees something more.

I truly loved the strength shown by both Julia and Jasper. They knew what they needed and with some honesty they found so much more.

Julia's friends who have appeared in the Siren of Sussex are shown in this one as well and are as loyal as friends can be. Mimi Matthews has a winner on her hand in this second serving of the Belles of London. These stories challenge society's rules and strictures and are purely delightful. I received an early copy through the publisher and Netgalley and this is my honest review.
